Bride Price is a very common practice in Africa. In fact. most Africans see it as a means to get back what they have spent on their daughters all through adult years..for most Ibos..if the bride is educated, it is going to be alot of money.I have a deep reservation for this cultural practise and its gut me more when people use culture as an excuse for this barbaric practice. The same culture that they trample upon everyday when they wear foreign cloths, speak foreign languages and worship foreign gods...this same people will still come about to invoke culture as the reason for doing this. Why sell your daughter like a slave, the quality of the goods(bride to be)determines the amount of money to be paid. Now, I have heard people saying that we can't discontinue our culture but I ask...why? there are lots of cultural practices that we have discontinued so what is special about this brideprice of a thing that we can't discontinue.? Men with their privileges and egos and superiority complex always have a way of saying they can do anything they want to their wives. They have a habit of saying "I paid your brideprice".They are right afterall...you can do whatever you like with goods that you have purchased... Brideprice is an encouragement for domestic violence...I am not saying brideprice causes domestic violence...I only said it encourages it...it's gives men the sense of a buyer who can do anything he likes to his goods. We can therefore start seeing women as an important part of the society...as brilliant and intelligent...as humans and not as slaves...we must therefore start thinking deeply and giving ourselves orientation....we should start asking ourselves questions such as;is the male child important more than the female child? . "if women are also empowered..can they actually succeed in inventions and discoveries more than men?" I respect women alot and I will never see them as slave and submissive fellows...I will rather stay single than pay brideprice for anybody...
